Maui Moisture- Is it worth it?

Recently, all I’ve seen over Instagram is Maui Moisture this, Maui Moisture that; there are ads everywhere and all of my favourite influencers have been going on about it. Naturally, I had to get in on the hype; I mean, I’m a marketing girl and I’ll fall for anything with pretty packaging and a Facebook ad. So I hauled myself down to Boots (in the snow I might add!), handed over my hard-earned cash and bought myself a shampoo, conditioner and mask.

It’s been a few weeks since then, I didn’t just want to use if once and tell you all about it because honestly after one wash I couldn’t reeeeally tell a difference (obviously) although in my mind now had beautiful hair like a Greek Goddess.

The Basics

Okay…so let’s start with the basics. Maui Moisture is a hair care brand who offers seven ranges of product; Colour Protection, Curl Quench, Heal & Hydrate, Nourish & Moisture, Smooth & Repair, Strength & Anti-Breakage and Thicken & Restore. I have naturally thick and curly hair so I bought the Curl Quench Shampoo, Conditioner and ‘Curl Smoothie’ hair mask which cost £8.99 each (on a 3 for 2 offer).

Now, I realise this hair care stuff isn’t cheap, but it’s not like I’m transitioning onto these products from 99p Alberto Balsam (not that there’s anything wrong with that). I currently use Ginger Shampoo from the Body Shop which is £8.50 a bottle- so not all that different.

The Appeal

The main draw for me is that Maui is vegan which is absolutely the be all and end all for me. Not only do I eat a plant based diet, I don’t wear fur, leather or silk, I won’t use products tested on animals and I’m trying to buy 100% vegan household and beauty products. So Maui was a win win. Not just that, the products are; non-silicones, non-parabens, non-sulfates, pure aloe vera juice and pure coconut water. I’m not 100% sure of what all that means but there are no nasties included and I’m all for that.

Plus, the packaging and bottle designs are SO dreamy I could die.

The Verdict

So I’ve used the shampoo and conditioner a couple times a week for a little under a month, and I’ve used the curl smoothie almost every day before sleeping with my hair in braids, and….I’m not a huge fan.

First off, I don’t really like the smell, it seems a little full-on and artificial to me. Second, the shampoo irritated my scalp. Now, I have quite sensitive skin on my face and head and these products really made me itch and flaky. I always held out high hopes for the hair mask, but it just wasn’t as good as others I’ve tried- it made my hair look a little greasy and flat (and I experimented with quantities).

I am SO disappointed that I don’t like Maui, because I was so ready to jump on the band wagon and never look back. Plus, my curls are an absolute NIGHTMARE if I leave my hair completely natural and I was really hoping that this was the answer…it wasn’t.

Maybe I didn’t try it for long enough, but I just couldn’t keep going with Maui. Looks like I won’t be ditching the Body Shop any time soon.

Am I crazy? Does anybody agree with me? If you’ve tried Maui Moisture and don’t want to let me feel alone in this Maui loving world then get in touch, I need you!

Thanks for sharing! I too have seen the hype and actually almost bought these, but they contained sulfa so they are not great on curly hair. They weigh it down and actually make it more frizzy!!! After reading this I’m glad I didn’t cave. Thanks for sharing! Hope you find something that really helps your hair!!

I’m so glad you actually gave an honest opinion! Thanks for this 🙂
