10 things to do for free (ish) anywhere

I have found that I am always going to be skint. Always. Mainly because I always have something to spend my money on; whether I’m saving to go travelling or I’m splurging all my cash on Gymshark, I never have spare money in the bank. I always try and stretch my cash as far as possible, if I’m travelling, why would I spend everything I have on fancy meals or excursions when I could travel for a little longer. Likewise, why would I spend all of my money on things to do at the weekend when I could spend it on new workout clothes at Gymshark (have I already said that? I just love Gymshark. Gymshark!)

Because of this, I naturally lean towards activities that are completely free, or there abouts. I could have a jam packed weekend at home in my own city, or travel to a new one and still spend hardly any $$$. Want to know how? Don’t worry I’ve got you!

1. Go to the Library

Going to the library is one of the best things you can do for free. No matter where you are in the World, I can almost guarantee that there’ll be a library AND that there will be at least a few books in your language. Even if you’re unable to borrow books there will usually be a comfy seating area where you can sit and read for a while which is perfect for when it’s too cold to constantly walk around outside. Plus, it’s not just books, you can usually borrow CD’s and films too, result!

2. Visit a gallery

Like libraries, there are free art galleries in most places and they act as a great escape from the cold outside. Going to a gallery is one of my favourite things to do as I have always been obsessed with art. Not a huge fan of art? I wouldn’t worry about it, galleries are a great place to sit and people watch and nosily listen in on people’s conversations.

3. Go to a coffee shop

Coffee shops are what dreams are made of. If I were only allowed to sit in a coffee shop for the rest of my life then I would die a happy woman. They’re the best place to sit, read a book, catch up with loved ones or watch the day go by. Get me a vegan cake, avocado on toast and a flat white and I’m in paradise.

4. Explore

No matter where you are in the world, I urge you to go and explore. Even if you’re in your home town and looking for something to do one afternoon then I’d still recommend it. You may think you know a place like the back of your hand but I can guarantee you don’t! Take a wrong turn, head off in a different direction, or hop on a bus somewhere, great things can happen when you get lost.

5. Take a walk

Walking is the cure for almost everything (just like a good cup of tea). Bored? Go for a walk! Stressed? Go for a walk! Feeling ill? Go for a walk! The list goes on. It doesn’t have to be long, but it’s free and it’s something to do. Explore your local woodland, go to the park or walk around town.

6. Learn a new skill

There are lot’s of free workshops available, you just need to find them. If your town has a University then post an ad or get into contact with students to be your teacher, they’ll usually help you for next to nothing to progress their portfolio or for experience. If you don’t want to learn then why not teach? Get in touch with your local community centre to host an English speaking session, a dance class, a pottery class or whatever other wonderfully weird skill you may have.

7. Free events

Concerts, fashion shows, exhibitions, lectures, there are always free events going on…you just need to find them. Google is your friend, but Facebook events can be really handy too. Or, why not go old school and go by word of mouth; ask your friends, strangers on the street or go into event spaces and see what is happening.

8. Piggy went to market

Markets are a great way to get to know a new place and their local delicacies. Not only that but you can usually grab a bargain meal and sell unique and interesting things you’re not likely to find anywhere else.

9. Don’t leave the house

Why leave the house when you can stay in? My idea of a perfect Sunday is literally never leaving my bed. Watch a film, read a book, do some yoga, listen to music, workout, do some work, watch YouTube, Skype your family, draw, browse social media, have a nap… Again, why leave the house when you can stay inside?

10. Free Trials

Free trials, discount codes and vouchers are a god send. It allows poor people like me to do things that I could usually never afford, for free…or there abouts. I can go to a fancy gym for the day, go to a swimming pool, go to a sauna, sign up for a movie subscription or spend the whole day watching Netflix, for nothing. Just make sure you remember to cancel your subscription or use a fake number so you don’t get bombarded with phone calls asking you to join for real.
